Do You Worry Your Shoulder Pain Will Never Get Better?

Do you get a sharp, debilitating pain in your shoulder when you are performing tasks like brushing your hair, putting on certain clothes or showering? Do you find it affecting you lifting things over head into a cupboard, doing DIY? Playing golf or lifting weights in the gym?

During these movements, where you raise your arm out to the side and then upwards over your head, do you alternate between no pain and pain? For example, during the first part of the moment you don’t feel any pain, and then suddenly your shoulder “catches” and there is sharp pain, followed by no pain again as you continue to move your arm upwards.

You might have contacted your GP who advised pain relief and rest, but this is often ineffective and reaching for the pills can be frustration and come with some side effects.

This causes you to worry about making it worse, and as a result you start to avoid certain tasks. Inevitably this changes your behaviour and habits over a period of time. You become weaker, stiffer and more painful. This is a common trajectory and we want you to avoid this path. To change direction you have to have confidence and knowledge of what is going on and perform the right exercises with the right treatment to get better and stay better.

The Mechanics Of Shoulder Pain

Shoulder pain is one of the most common complaints for GP’s but physiotherapy treatment is more effective than pain relief alone and it has been shown to be more effective than surgery. The shoulder joint is the most flexible joint in the body and because of this many different injuries can be sustained.

The shoulder is comprised of three bones, the clavicle (collar bone), the scapula (shoulder blade) and the humerus (arm).
17 different muscles attach on to the shoulder blade giving us a wonderful range of motion but equally can increase the likliehood of injury. The rotator cuff is a group of muscles which help to stabilise and provide foundational strength to the shoulder.

Shoulder complaints are the third most common musculoskeletal problem after back and neck disorders. The highest incidence is in women and people aged 45–64 years. Of all shoulder disorders, shoulder impingement syndrome (SIS) accounts for 36%, making it the most common shoulder injury.

What We Treat

We regularly help people who have had long standing shoulder problems and who have just learned to accept and live with their pain. If this sounds like you and you are now ready to do something about it, then please make a positive decision and give our team a call.

If you tried rest and pain relief and it didn’t work, then we are not surprised. If you have tried other physiotherapists or chiropractors and not had the outcome you want or even worse don’t even have an understanding of what is going on with your shoulder pain then we can help.

We want to give you a long term solution so we don’t offer a quick fix. We won’t be using ultrasound or electrotherapy and we won’t be using special fancy, gimmicks to help you. We will provide effective, evidence based treatment that works. Check out our testimonials for proof.

We will expect you to do your side of the treatment and follow through on the rehab plan. If you don’t perform your exercises your recovery will be much slower and less likely to occur.

We can help make you comfortable to sleep on your side again and get your energy levels back to normal

We can help you keep out of the Doctor’s waiting room and keep you off any pain relief

It doesn’t have to be like this.

Do I need an x-Ray?

An x-Ray of the knee is only really beneficial if you have had a fall or significant trauma. We will easily be able to diagnose your shoulder pain through various tests and using our experience.

Will I need to do shoulder exercises?

Yes, given how many muscles attach on to the shoulder from our experience the rehab of any shoulder problem will always involve exercises. These just have to be tailored to your injury, the stage of healing it is at and your lifestyle and goals. This is why a individualised approach works best and the one size fits all approach is generally ineffective.

I’d just like to say how much I appreciated the treatment I have received from Steven. A few months ago I was plagued with neck and shoulder pain but following a clear rehab plan he was able to give me a complete understanding of the underlying issues and exercises that mean I am now pain free. Great work. Very professional and pleasant manner. Absolutely recommend him to anyone looking for a physio.

Andrew Mathieson (age 74)

I thought pain and stiffness were a normal part of ageing and that limits on everyday activities just had to be accepted. Then, over a few weeks, my left shoulder became stiff and painful, I was unable to put on my jacket and the pain kept me awake at night. I attended Steven and after a thorough assessment he diagnosed a frozen shoulder. He prescribed a course of exercises, with a helpful online exercise video, to do between visits. After 6 visits the shoulder regained most of its flexibility and the pain reduced markedly. I continued the exercises until the problem was resolved. I’ve learned that getting old (I’m 71) does not mean you have to accept painful stiff joints.
